Hit
Hit - A single request from a web browser for a single item from a Web server. This is a somewhat misleading measure when applied to web-traffic, as a single page can generate many "hits" - one for the page itself, and one for each component (e.g. an image) on the page.
"Hits" was often used by publishers as a figure quoted to potential advertisers because the numbers for a site could be extremely large. However the terminology has fallen out of favour because of its inaccuracy in allowing traffic measurement across different sites. Page impressions, visitors and visits are now the accepted standards for describing a site's traffic. If a publisher quotes "hits", you should clarify whether they mean "page impressions" or "visits", and/or ask for those figures instead.
