Banner - A long, horizontal, online display advert often found running across the top of a page. There are a number of commonly used sizes, which can be seen in the "Standards and Guidelines" section of this site (under "Resources". As with other display adverts, banners can be images (.gifs, .jpegs or .png files) or can be "rich-media" ads - such as "Flash" ads. Ads are usually linked to the advertiser's website, so viewers can click on the ad to visit the site. The number of times an ad is clicked compared to the number of times it is shown is referred to as the "Click-through rate" or CTR.
