UK: Apple sells 2m iPads in 60 days
Apple announced yesterday that it has sold 2 million iPads in the two months since the device's launch in the US, making the company $1 billion.
The tablet was launched in Europe on Friday May 28th and many stores experienced long queues, some forming overnight, of eager consumers.
It took just under a month for the new technology to reach the million sales mark, which is a quicker rate than the iPhone, which took 74 days to sell one million.
Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, said: "Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do.We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone."
A basic model of the large touchscreen computer will cost £429 and the device can cost more than £600 if extras are added.
At the moment iPads are only available in Apple stores and 139 shops in the Dixon Group. Other retailers will have to wait ten weeks at least to stock the gadget.
iPads will be launched in nine other countries in July.
Companies such as ITV, Sky and Volkswagen are creating apps that will be available on the iPad.
