Making history, the number of people connected to the internet passed 1 billion for the first time during December, says ComScore, with Chinese netizens outnumbering Americans. IBM points to a second story: the rise of the machines.

During December, nearly 180 million Chinese used the internet, helping Asia Pacific grab easily the largest share of net users for the month.
