New Zealand Online Advertising Spend Reports Record Quarter

The Moving Annual Total (MAT) to September 30 2009 is $207.67m with a 15.8 percent year-on-year increase for Q3, 2009.

The latest IAB Insight Report for Q3, 2009 has been released by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) of New Zealand and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

The third quarter of 2009 has delivered another strong result for interactive advertising in New Zealand with spending at $57.69m, up 9.91% on the last quarter ($52.49m).

The moving annual total to September 30, 2009 reached over $207m passing the magic $200m mark.

Michael Gregg, Chairman of IAB NZ commented that: “Performance across the online advertising market was mixed in the third calendar quarter of 2009. Display continued its strong run through difficult times with 8.69% year on year growth. Search & Directories was the biggest mover and now comprises 38.76% of all New Zealand online advertising spend. Classified spend felt the decline in job listings and a depressed property market, but was up 6.15% on the previous quarter. The rebound of online classifieds will continue through the final quarter of 2009 as the economy improves.”

Search & Directories led the way at $22.36m followed by Classifieds at $18.11m and Display with $17.22m. Search & Directories experienced major growth which is hardly surprising as the economic situation has placed extra pressure on marketers to maximise returns on their investment.

Classifieds also experienced positive growth from the last quarter of 6.15%.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Partner Chris Perree follows on to say, “the unique perspective that the Insight report offers illustrates the soaring growth of online advertising in the New Zealand Market. The increasing number of participant sites in the report is a testament to the growing recognition of the online medium as a key channel to interact with customers. We anticipate growth in other forms of interactive advertising, particularly in the mobile space.”

Darrin Lim, Digital Insights Manager from Yellow™ adds, “It is pleasing to see strong growth returning to the online advertising market, and the Search & Directories segment in particular...Advertisers have been attracted by the strong ROI and measurability of the medium during this difficult period and now that the economy is beginning to improve, advertisers are choosing to increase their commitment to it."

Media Services Group, ZenithOptimedia* is predicting that internet advertising will account for 14.9% of all global ad expenditure by 2011 and 13.7% by the end of the year. Locally, IAB NZ expects domestic online share to reach 10% by the end of 2009.
