Battle rages over “sponsored links” on Ziff sites
AucklandMay 7, 2007Mark Evans
Paul Conley, in his trade-publishing blog, reports that there's a row brewing over ZDNet's use of Intellitxt advertising within the text of stories on the ZDNet site.
The Intellitxt links pop-up an ad when the reader mouses over a hyperlinked word in the story body.
According to Conley, he wrote a blog post criticising the practice, which was then picked up by Folio magazine. Now the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) has waded into the debate stating that "ad links within editorial text should NOT be sold under any condition", and calling on ZDNet to remove them.
The post raises an intereresting question about the seperation of editorial and advertising online, and when are the boundaries crossed.
