Search Engines are Now the Primary Information Source

Check out: http://www.webpronews.com/blogtalk/2008/10/28/local-customers-use-internet-more-than-yellow-pages

“In 2008, for the first time, search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN were the leading source of information for local customers. This means that more local customers are now using the internet to find local merchants and other businesses online. The report also revealed an increased usage frequency of online sources which are used at least once a week or more compared to less than once a week for print directory usage.”

It was obviously only a matter of time, I actually thought it would have happened sooner though.

How do you set a price on online banner advertising ?

Hi

Can I ask this question? I want to find out how you decide on putting price if you are thinking about selling banner space or other advertising space on your website? rather then get a response by message or on this thread I think it would be interesting to see how you go about this by voting, that way we can all see what is the most popular method.

if you’ve got a set formula though, please post a comment i’d be interested to see if there is any “rule of thumb” for this..!

Nielsen: Move from pageviews to Time on Site

Nielsen revises its ranking guage from emphasising pageviews to time-on-site. How will this effect rankings and ad sales locally?

I’m certainly glad to see page views de-emphasised - I’m a little bored with seeing content chunked up to create multiple page views from the one piece of content. Maybe now I’ll have to use the print-button less to view full articles - which removed the ads anyway…

Will we now see “having a slow webserver” as a technique for ensuring longer time-on-site though? ;)

Magazines are Dead - Debate - I need your stats!

Hi everyone,

There’s a big debate coming up between the MPA and IAB: http://www.iab.org.nz/events/item/iab_mpa_presentmagazines_are_dead

Although it’s a fairly easy proposition to defend, any thoughts and metrics to back up our clear-cut case would be most helpful.

For instance, Lance Wiggs has given us a great snapshot on the decline in readership: http://lancewiggs.com/2009/10/27/nz-magazine-readership-numbers/ Tearaway down almost 42% on previous year - that must really hurt!

Is a magazine, really a magazine once it becomes an online site (eg Autotrader)? Surely the printed edition then becomes redundant ...

I welcome your views. Cheers, MG

Does PPC effect organic search rankings?

Hi all

We’ve started running a PPC campaign and we noticed a fairly immediate and significant improvement in our organic search rankings for the keywords targeted. The SE is Google. We haven’t noticed this before and I’ve been running these things on and off for a while now.

I understood organic to be neutral and unaffected by how much we pay Google. Are we now getting favoured because we are paying or is something else going on, has always gone on and I just haven’t noticed?

Cheers
Julian
