What happened to the days where magazines were jam-packed of advertisers and weighed as much as a brick? Thanks to a shift and focus on alternative media (aka the Internet), advertisers have slashed, cut and eliminated many of their print advertising budgets.

Or does digital just need to get off their holier than thou high horse and accept that magazines are here to stay?

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Magazines Publishers Association (MPA) brought top industry experts together for a good ole fashion debate on whether Magazines are Dead

Find out:
•         Ways to ensure your online advertising is effective
•         How to create a culture of measurement
•         How to draw attention to your ads without frustrating your website visitors
•         Whether text links work better than graphical ads

Marketing Now April 15-16

You know your audience is online. It's online  they do their research, participate in online communities and it's increasingly online where they purchase products and services.

Online marketing is more than just having a great website. If you build it, they won't just come. And we're not talking about banner ads or pay per click.  Search engine optimisation, building brand advocates, engaging the public via social networking sites and getting key influencers to talk about your products/services are just some ways social media and online marketing can help increase business and market your messages. It's also measurable using web analytics providing a clear ROI.

The old spray and pray approach of mass advertising doesn't work anymore and is prohibitively expensive. We fast-forward over TV commercials, channel surf through radio ads and are impervious to print ads. Marketing has changed from 'push' to 'pull'.

Wellington is hosting the first training and education event on Social Media and Online marketing and PR in NZ. The two-day event will be held at Te Papa on April 15/16. International experts in the field of social media, SEO, online communities and online PR and marketing will present and deliver interactive seminars and workshops, and attendees will leave with actionable strategies to implement to their businesses.

IAB Upskill Sessions 1.0 5-7 March 2009

Online and interactive mediums are undeniably the fastest growing advertising channels in NZ and around the world. Although there are many established practices - they constantly evolve; new formats, new technologies, new pricing models, new metrics and even more jargon!

It is understandably hard to keep up. Thankfully the The Interactive Advertising Bureau can help you and your team with a course that teaches all the basics, as well as the latest techniques and terminology, so that you’re making the most of online advertising opportunities.

The IAB NZ Upskills series of practical two and a half day hands-on workshop sessions are designed to lift skills in Interactive Advertising no matter what your background.

This first session (1.0) is designed for those new to online advertising. It’s an Interactive Advertising 101 structured around a live brief from a Top tier advertiser that has never advertised online before. The attendees may be as new to interactive advertising as the client and the course is a fun way for everyone to add some real value to a campaign that will actually be implemented (out of the winning presentation at the end of the course) across IAB NZ member sites and platforms.

Top industry mentors will be available throughout the course to teach, coach and assist teams of five to understand, dissect and construct a winning pitch back to the client on day three. Attendees could be from agencies, publishers, service providers and marketers with or without traditional media experience.

Check for "special association rates" for our partner associations, such as CAANZ and the Marketing Association, when you register.

Mentors & coaches are...

Adam Good - Director of Digital Innovation - Clemenger Group
John Schofield - Managing Director - Catch Media
Alistair Jamison - CEO, NZ - Starcom Worldwide
Charles Coxhead - General Manager - NetConcepts
Darnell Dixon - General Manager, New Zealand - SNAAK Media

I-COM 2 - 2nd International Conference on Online Media Measurement

Barcelona, February 5th-8th, 2008

The Digital Media industry has undergone staggering growth in the last few years, accompanied by an increasingly complex measurement challenge. While some are still trying to understand comparability between the Web and some forms of traditional print and broadcast media, emerging media and devices have already changed how people use online sites to search, read news or participate in social networking. With the ability to access services from televisions, mobile devices or even game consoles, to timeshift when downloading music and podcasts to listen to later and to install widgets and RSS feeds, the increasing fragmentation of Digital Media is making it more and more complex to measure and monetise online activity

At the International Conference on Online Media Measurement (I-COM), to be held 5-8th February, 2008 in Barcelona, delegates will explore the latest online measurement issues facing the Digital Media Industry, with the goals of international cooperation and understanding, information sharing and working toward consensus on best practices across media platforms and different forms of measurement.
This unique event has been conceived with the participation of the international bodies representing the most influential participants in the Digital Media industry:

  • CAA  (Chinese Advertising Association)
  • EACA (European Association of Communication Agencies)
  • EGTA (Association of Television and Radio Sales Houses)
  • EIAA (European Interactive Advertising Association)
  • FEDMA (Federation of European Direct & Interactive Marketing)
  • IIAB Europe (Interactive Advertising Bureau)
  • IAB US (Interactive Advertising Bureau)
  • IFABC (International Federation of Audit Bureaux of Circulations)
  • MMA (Mobile Marketing Association)
  • OPA Europe (Online Publishers Association Europe)

The conference will be held in English. Conference program and venue information are available at http://www.i-com.org

NOTE: IAB New Zealand members qualify for a special conference registration price. Please note on the registration if you register for the conference.

Wellington Christmas Party

The Wellington Interactive crowd turned out in force on Dec 11th on a balmy summer night to enjoy a few Xmas drinks and the sounds of Uncle Monkey - who had people up and dancing all night.

Good food, good company and good music made the night a great success, so thanks to our co-sponsors for the evening - Yahoo!Xtra and Nielsen Online (the new name of Nielsen//Netratings).

We were a little slow getting around to taking photos ... sorry, but it was nice out on the balcony with a beer. But here are some in case you've forgotten what you did that night.

May's Auckland Thirsty Thursday was sponsored by the good people at The Radio Network.  Thanks Stephanie!!

The venue was Foxes Alehouse and there was another great turnout. So we're looking to hold it there again in June. Let us know what you thought of the event and the venue.

I did take some video of the event - hoping for a little Youtube cameo on this site. But unfortunately I can't find the cable for my camera to download the shots. So until I get a new one, we'll just have to make do with memories ...

Thanks again to the team from the Radio Bureau!
