Ross Howard, Creative Director, TEQUILA
Case Study: How Whybin's enticed Sovereign's audience to engage in a relationship with a life insurance company while still young and active

Whybin TBWA Tequila set out to achieve the impossible: to get Sovereign's audience engaged in a relationship with a life insurance company while still young and active and while 'the end' is still a long, long, way off.

To reinforce the idea that you can choose the life you want, the agency launched a campaign to embrace an active approach to life - with Sovereign as your life partner. They created an online interactive game called 'Life's Choice', to allow people to explore how their lifestyle choices related to their happiness and health.

Kiwibank's Easyswitch campaign is encouraging consumers to switch to Kiwibank via a unique interactive YouTube channel called 'Green Ops', with the look and feel of a first-person POV-style online game.

The 'gamified' site has already been wildly popular with visitors, and has prompted many to switch their banks to Kiwibank.

Ben Barnes, Digital Art Director, DDB & Nivin Sewpershad, Digital Strategist, McDonalds
Case study: McDonald’s, Chicken so tasty it sells itself

Infamous cricketer Australian spin bowler Shane Warne featured in this humourous online execution where Shane appeared in banners where fake loading bars would sit in front of his face; a never-ending buffering icon obscured him from view & users got the chance to click, drag and remove him altogether.

As part of a through-the-line campaign, online helped total chicken sales at McDonald’s increase by 80%. And 2 weeks after launch, McDonald’s New Zealand recorded their highest sales week EVER in the history of being open in this country.

And to top it all off, not long after the campaign launched, Shane Warne’s proposal to English model/actress, Liz Hurley was accepted. Coincidence? Who can tell?

Samantha Ramlu, Interactive Strategist & Gareth Parry, Account Director, Method Studio
Case study: The Twinings NZ Breakfast Tea campaign

Kiwi's love a good cup of tea especially when they're given the freedom to mix their own blend – as Twinings offered consumers last year. Twining have been selling tea since 1706 – back when most people drank ale for breakfast!

As part of an integrated campaign, online helped New Zealanders re-connect with their favourite tea – Twinings – by becoming tea connoisseurs. Consumers were driven to a website where they could mix their own blend of kiwiana tea and go into win some great prizes – including the chance your tea blend gets made. The winner's tea was inspired by the magic of birdsong in the bush as day breaks... sigh... where's my cuppa?

Mike Wilson, Strategic Director Digital, .99
Case study: New World Easter promotion

The New World Easter promotion touches on moving a traditional business into the digital era.

Dealing with rising fuel prices and frugal customers New World wanted a new promotion without spending a traditional budget. The solution was an online game taking the form of The Great Cleverbaskets Easter Hunt.

Results were staggering: on average one person entered every 5 seconds for 3 weeks straight! Users spent an average of 6 minutes playing the game making the New World website more popular than most big websites in NZ for July. And more importantly New World increased its sales by 9.9% with an overall total ROI of 27.7%.

Recently Alysha wrote a blog on 'NZ Media - Innovate or die' where she talked about CPM deals and the damage they can do if publishers rely solely on these instead of investing in more sophisticated buying options such as behavioural targeting. Alysha will discuss this often controversial topic further next month, in the meantime here's your opportunity to ask one of NZ's leading digital experts the tough questions which she will endeavour to cover during her pres.

Post your questions at Google Moderator and yes we are taking anonymous ones..but may not answer them!

Who should attend? Those interested in a healthy debate around innovative ways to grow the industry; aimed at smaller publishers

Background check

IAB NZ presents…Kia Motors: a case study

sponsored by

IAB NZ presents...Kia Motors: a case study – presented by Graeme Perry, Strategic & Corporate Affairs Manager, Kia Motors

The economic recession created many challenges for the auto industry. However, Kia Motors jumped out of the blocks with a record start to 2010 new vehicle sales in New Zealand.

The 252 new models registered during January represent a 166% increase on the same month a year ago, which completely shadows the 6% growth by the whole industry in January, and is the highest total recorded by Kia since it entered the market a decade and a half ago.

According to reports by Google and Ispos MORI, the internet plays a dramatic role in the purchase of a new or used car. In 2009, Google announced that 80% of new car buyers start their search on the internet and from this, 69% started that search using a search engine.

Join us as Graeme Perry, Strategic & Corporate Affairs Manager, Kia Motors New Zealand shares the details behind their success and how online has been a big part of it.

Automotive Online Marketing Trends in 2010 – presented by Michael Gregg, Head of Advertising at Trade Me and Chairman, IAB.

As audiences continue to shift online, automotive ad spend will follow, according to a recent study from The Kelsey Group where they predict that annual revenues in the automotive advertising market will hold steady at $40 billion globally through 2011.

In the US, there has been a structural shift to automotive online advertising.
Total Advertising Spending by US Auto Manufacturers, by Media Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for 2005-2007:

  • Television -5.2%
  • Magazines -7.5%
  • Internet* 48.0%
  • Newspapers -31.1%
  • Radio -0.4%
  • Outdoor 0.3%

Source: eMarketer, “Automotive Marketing Online: Negotiating the Curves”, June 2008

While in New Zealand, figures released by IAB/PwC for online adspend in the automotive category show Q1, 2010 to be the highest quarter since 2008.

Michael Gregg, Head of Advertising at Trade Me, will share his thoughts on online marketing trends and experiences in the automotive sector, from New Zealand’s biggest automotive website, Trade Me Motors.

Who should attend?
Directors, managers and professionals in charge of Marketing & Communications, Digital Marketing, Online Media. Agency buyers & planners.

How can Publishers best engage with social media users? A Facebook perspective

Presented by: Paul Webster | Facebook

A few clever publishers including the New York Times and CNN have figured out what users of social media sites like Facebook really want and are great case studies on how to best leverage social marketing to engage with people in a two-way dialogue.

Many publishers, often working closely with their agencies, have been able to launch and iterate their models over time and have learned about the importance of their brands being authentic and that Facebook can be as much their ears as it is their voice.

RSVP today - there are only 15 seats available (places are limited to one per company)

IAB & ANZA present…Outfox, Outsmart and Outgrow Your Competition

sponsored by

2010 will be the definitive year for online advertising in New Zealand. Interactive ad spend increased from $193m in 2008 to $214m in 2009, and its share of overall advertising grew from 8.3% to 10.5% year-on-year. It is the first time interactive share has breached the 10% threshold. Right now your brand is likely to have massive opportunity to dominate its category online - here's why:

  • Many categories are massively under-represented in search, display and social media advertising
  • Many brands are tipping a much smaller % of their advertising spend into online than the % of media consumption from their customers
  • Many brands fail to track, revise and update their creative approaches to online advertising in a timely (daily!) manner
  • Many brands fail to fund their media executions appropriately to maximise the long-tail opportunities for their brand to be at every point of customer engagement online

If your brand is in one of these key categories you must attend this event to find out how to be at the head of the pack!

    •    FMCG
    •    Gardening / Renovations
    •    Home Entertainment
    •    Alcohol
    •    Retail
    •    Automotive

Josh Borthwick | MD | Adhub: What are the opportunities available and who are the strong brands in online and why?

Some staple opportunities exist online depending on your business and the nature of your products and services. The largest are search and display. These formats are the most prolific in terms of investment from marketers and the results they deliver. Unfortunately many brands make the mistake of investing in one or the other. The reality is both are necessary to really build a profile online - display for reach and purchase intent and search for conversion and traffic.

Social media is the topic of 2010 and two clear winners have emerged for different reasons. Facebook for its ability to create buzz and buy audience share and Twitter for its immediacy and proliferation. Both platforms offer new and exciting ways to communicate with customers and turn detractors into raving fans.

The most important thing for your brand is to discover what formats and platforms are important and how to grab share from your competitors!

 Ryf Quail | GM | Carat: Why marketers should invest more in online media {view bio}

> 88% - that's 3.2million New Zealanders have access to the internet
> 80% have gone online in the last 4 weeks

However, advertisers only spent 10.6% online in 2009. Does that mean their fishing rods are broken?

Ryf Quail, GM of Carat NZ lays it down straight for kiwi marketers. He will look at how many brands fail to fund their media executions appropriately to maximise the long-tail opportunities for their brand to be at every point of customer engagement online.

Jimmy McGee | Head of Commercial | Trade Me: How marketers can Outfox, Outsmart and Outgrow their Competition using Classifieds
{view bio}

The web has proved a perfect enabler for the classifieds market. From inauspicious beginnings 10 years ago, online real estate, employment and automotive sites have flourished.

However in 2009, the classifieds market stalled with spend decreasing from $75.32m to $71.43m.

What does the future hold for online classifieds?  Find out about the emerging trends and how you can use them to your advantage.

Mark Roper | New Zealand Marketing Manager | Sanitarium: Case study
{view bio}

For over a century, Sanitarium has strived to educate NZers on better lifestyles. From their founding in 1898, Sanitarium advocated a nutritious diet and regular exercise, leading to their innovations in the breakfast foods category.

In recent years, this category has exploded with a raft of new entrants promising varying, improved health benefits. In addition the internet has become a catalyst for a global awakening in informed wellness. Communities are sharing information and advice on all aspects of health and lifestyle.

In 2009, Sanitarium committed to invest further in their digital strategy as a core component of developing their position as a respected leader in Health & Wellbeing. This was reflected in a significant increase in online media spend and the development of a unique online partnership that could provide inspiring and informative content for the key audience of health aware women.

Mark will share the case study of the partnership, and insights into how the inclusion of digital into the Sanitarium marketing mix supports their marketing objectives.

Mark will be joined by Alysha Buckley, General Manager, PHDIQ – Sanitarium’s digital media agency.

IAB & PwC presents…Structuring fast growing companies – small businesses don’t work, people do

IAB and PwC have put together a series of educational events aimed specifically at the needs of small, growing publishers & companies. These events are produced from input around the IAB board table, member requests and are part of IAB's ongoing focus to grow the online advertising market.

Please note these events are for IAB members only and are free to attend. Seats are limited to 20 allowing for plenty of interaction between presenter & attendees.

Structuring fast growing companies – small businesses don’t work, people do!

Presented by Rod Drury, Chief Executive Officer, Xero, WELLINGTON

Startup growth can happen really quickly, and it can be hard to predict ahead of time.

Look at companies like Facebook and how fast they are growing. In just a few short years Facebook has grown from a few guys in a dorm room with not an ounce of business experience between them, to a company with over a thousand staff! Can you imagine what that sort of growth must be like? How do you make sure you don’t go off the rails? How do you keep delivering product excellence? How do you keep the right culture in the company? How do you hire the right people and so many of them?

RSVP today - there are only 20 seats available. This event is for IAB NZ members only and free

Background check:

Rod Drury is CEO and founder of NZX-listed Xero an online accounting solution for small businesses.

One of New Zealands leading technology entrepreneurs, Rod is a member of the New Zealand Hi-Tech Hall of Fame, NZ Hi-Tech Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006 and 2007,  World Class New Zealander for ICT in 2008 and an Honorary Fellow of the NZ Computer Society.

Rod is a Director of the New Zealand Stock Exchange, was a Director of TradeMe when it was sold to Fairfax Media and is a member of Victoria University of Wellington Facility of Commerce Advisory Board.

Rod recently announced Pacific Fibre, a new $900m international fibre cable project connecting Australia and NZ to the USA with Sam Morgan and Stephen Tindall.

IAB presents…Under-invest in inventory management at your peril!

IAB and PwC are putting together a series of educational events aimed specifically at the needs of small, growing publishers. These events are produced from input around the IAB board table, member requests and are part of IAB's ongoing focus to grow the online advertising market.

Under-invest in inventory management at your peril!

Presented by Laura Maxwell-Hansen | General Manager | Yahoo!Xtra

To be financially viable now and into the future, Online publishers require advanced inventory management and a sound go-to-market sales strategy.

This is a must see presentation for smaller online publishers. Laura will cover:

  • Online publishers need to manage risk
  • It’s not just the number of unique visitors, it’s what you do with them
  • You don’t have to lose your brand to perform
  • Managed inventory delivers higher eCPMs
  • Optimisation = more clicks or conversions, for less impressions
  • Lift the hood and see what’s driving your revenue?
  • DIY or Jump on Board?
  • What’s the final decision?

All attendees will be the first to receive Laura's white paper around this topic.

RSVP today - there are only 20 seats available (places are limited to one per company)

Background check:

Laura Maxwell-Hansen is the General Manager of Yahoo!Xtra , NZ’s favourite online portal.  Her media career in NZ spans 10 years, beginning with Buspak NZ, moving into APN Outdoor and since 2008 ensconced at Yahoo!Xtra.

She is an annual judge at the CAANZ Media Awards and in 2009 she presented a seminar series “Online Advertising Success” together with Zeald.com, to educate over 1000 New Zealand business-owners on how to incorporate digital into their marketing strategies.

Before media her career spanned sales, marketing and business development roles, including managing sports licensing product programmes for Sydney Olympics, America’s Cup 2000 and the All Blacks. A four-year stint in Australia covered marketing an events centre, radio station and retail complex.

Laura’s experience in business across manufacturing, retail, export/import and media, provides a solid platform from which to lead a dynamic business such as Yahoo!Xtra.
Laura spends her “spare” time enjoying travel, good food and wine and working those excesses off by donning running or cycling shoes.

What happened to the days where magazines were jam-packed of advertisers and weighed as much as a brick? Thanks to a shift and focus on alternative media (aka the Internet), advertisers have slashed, cut and eliminated many of their print advertising budgets.

Or does digital just need to get off their holier than thou high horse and accept that magazines are here to stay?

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Magazines Publishers Association (MPA) brought top industry experts together for a good ole fashion debate on whether Magazines are Dead
